Santuario Pelagos: conoscerlo per amarlo e proteggerlo

The project, carried out by Tethys in collaboration with four Ligurian municipalities, aimed to promote knowledge of the Pelagos Sanctuary and the Pelagos Agreement’s goals and actions. It engaged various audiences, including municipal staff, teachers, students, residents, and tourists, through in-person and online meetings, webinars, informational materials, a video, and a comic strip. The objective was to raise awareness about the importance of protecting this unique international marine protected area.

The project focused on informing the Ligurian region about the Sanctuary and its importance. In partnership with the municipalities of Sanremo, Ceriale, Levanto and Zoagli, Tethys produced and distributed both traditional and innovative communication tools.

Webinars led by Tethys experts targeted municipal staff, teachers, and local stakeholders, including hotel managers, shop owners, and entrepreneurs. Additionally, during summer 2025, Tethys experts held meetings for residents and tourists in the four Ligurian municipalities, covering topics such as the Sanctuary’s features, the objectives of the Pelagos Agreement, sustainable development opportunities, anthropogenic pressures, and best practices for minimizing impacts.

Specific actions have been directed towards the new generations through schools. Teachers from the four municipalities were offered dedicated online meetings and the use of 'Missione Pelagos' for three years.

Citizens and tourists were engaged with tools designed to spark curiosity: a video featuring the most spectacular images from Tethys, and a specially created comic strip for younger audiences that tells the story of the Pelagos Sanctuary.

Con lo scopo di informare il territorio ligure sul Santuario Pelagos e sensibilizzare il pubblico locale all’importanza di questa grande area marina protetta, il progetto prevedeva una capillare comunicazione customizzata su diversi target del pubblico locale.

Assieme al capofila, e agli altri partner, l’Istituto Tethys ha realizzato e veicolato sia materiale informativo tradizionale che mezzi di comunicazione più innovativi.

Una serie di webinar rivolti al personale dei Comuni, ai portatori di interesse, come albergatori e altri imprenditori, esercenti, e agli  insegnanti delle scuole primarie e secondarie di primo grado sono stati tenuti da esperti di Tethys.

Al pubblico generico di residenti e di turisti sono state dedicate, nell’estate 2025, quattro conferenze in presenza nei Comuni coinvolti.

I punti-chiave erano le caratteristiche del Santuario, e gli obiettivi dell’Accordo Pelagos, la valorizzazione di questa grande area marina protetta, e le relative opportunità di sviluppo sostenibile; le pressioni di origine antropica, e le normative e buone pratiche per la mitigazione degli impatti.

Azioni specifiche sono state rivolte alle nuove generazioni attraverso la scuola. Agli insegnanti dei quattro Comuni sono stati offerti incontri dedicati on line e l’utilizzo per tre anni di “Missione Pelagos”

Infine a cittadini e turisti sono stati dedicati mezzi pensati per attirare la loro curiosità: un video sul Santuario Pelagos con le più spettacolari immagini di mammiferi marini raccolte da  Tethys, e un fumetto a colori appositamente realizzato per i più giovani, sulla nascita del Santuario Pelagos.
