Cetacean Sanctuary Research Tips for a longer stay (see Useful sites for further ideas)
2-3 days Around Sanremo you'll find same of the most renown holyday resorts in Lilguria. We suggest you to visit hills just beside the sea: villages like Dolceacqua, Pigna (with its Spas), Castelvittorio, Triora (with its witch legends), Bussana damaged by the 1887 earthquake, etc. If you prefer to move towards Côte d'Azur you'll find on your way the Hanbury Botanical Gardens, Prehistoric Museum of Balzi Rossi, Mentone (the lemon town) and MonteCarlo with its famous Oceanographic Museum. For those who enjoy nightlife in Bordighera and Mentone along the seaside there is a variety of bars and clubs.
7 days or more Leaving from Sanremo we suggest two different solutions to extend your vacation: Moving east, at 150 Km, Genoa "Signora del mare" (Mistress of the Sea): "The narrow and dark pathways of "Zena" mirror in the "Porto Vecchio" (Old harbour), side by side with the aristocratic Genoa of beautiful palaces. The popular Genova of workshops and fry houses, and even the literate Genova of Madame de Staël and Flaubert." For sightseeing we suggest via Balbi and via Garibaldi, with their palaces such as: Palazzo Reale (home of the Galleria Nazionale), Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco e Palazzo Tursi. Moving by the sea you'll find Palazzo Ducale, la Cattedrale di SanLorenzo (principal medieval monument in town) with the Museo del Tesoro and finally the Porto Vecchio, arching between the Lanterna (lighthouse), the symbol of the city, and the old pier. Another attraction close by is the Riviera di Levante (east coast) where you can visit: Recco - well known for the "focaccia al formaggio" (chees specialty) -, Camogli - with the colourful houses -, Portofino - reachable by sea (day trips ferries from Genova-Porto Vecchio) or by walks in the Parco Regionale di Portofino - and Santa Margherita Ligure. Moving west you'll stay in the Riviera dei Fiori (flower coast) discovering old flavours and ancient villages (Isolabona, Dolceacqua, Pigna, Perinaldo e Triora). The more lively Costa Azzurra is very near: Mentone, Roquebrune-CapMartin, Monte-Carlo - visit the Oceanographic Museum and the Prince Palace and Cathedral - Beaulieu, La Turbie - roman village -, etc. (visit http://www.menton.com/ for more info).
If you want more sea life you can board one of the sailing boats in PortoSole (Sanremo) and make a weekend or day trips sailing, or you can make beautiful dives applying to the diving centers of the area. For more details see the page "Useful links".
