The marine biology museum of Porto Cesareo features a basking shark captured
by local fishermen and displays models of local fish fauna.

A tuna trap ("tonnara") used to exist in the area, but has long been dismissed
owing to the decline of large tuna - as happened to other such traps in the Mediterranean.

Marine monsters such as the white shark and billfish photographed above are memories of the past.
Marine megafauna has declined dramatically over the past decades.

A plentiful catch in Porto Cesareo, as shown in a vintage photo on display at the local "Pro Loco".

A juvenile common bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus, displayed at the marine biology
museum of Porto Cesareo (and wrongly labelled Delphinus delphis).

A bottlenose dolphin calf exposed by a fishmonger at his shop in Porto Cesareo.
The calf carries signs of bycatch, possibly in driftnet gear.
