List of publications

Scientists and conservationists spend much of their life
frantically writing documents and recommendations,
but little or nothing happens in the real world. Is paper,
and then more paper, all that governments really want
from us? When will the time for action come? Are we
allowing ourselves to be lost in the illusion of doing
conservation while in fact we are mostly just producing
conservation tools that are rarely used?

Honors and awards

Pew Marine Conservation Fellow
Regarded as the world's preeminent awards for marine conservation, Pew Marine Conservation Fellowships have been granted since 1996 to fund innovative work in marine ecosystems, fisheries management, coastal conservation, and marine contamination. Nominations are made through an international network of environmental experts. Evaluation and selection of Pew Fellows is conducted by an international advisory committee. Selection is based on the applied conservation merit of the project, the individual's record of professional accomplishment, and the potential impact of the initiative. As 2001 Pew Marine Conservation Fellow, I was awarded $150,000 for a 3-year project titled "What threatens coastal dolphin populations in the Mediterranean Sea? Insight from interdisciplinary research in key areas". So far, this is the only Pew Fellowship awarded to an Italian scientist.

Henry Ford European Conservation Award
The 1996 edition of one of the most prestigious environmental prizes in Europe attracted 1,000+ entries from 26 countries. After being selected as the best Italian project, the Adriatic Dolphin Project was seen by the jury as "a model of ongoing education, coupled with professional research and management", and was awarded "Overall Best European Project". As the Adriatic Dolphin Project founder and director (1987-1996), I received the Grand Prix during the ceremony held in Budapest. The international panel of judges included representatives of the Council of Europe, the Conservation Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme and UNESCO. The $60,000 prize was entirely used to support conservation-oriented research on Mediterranean coastal dolphins.

Others
In its First Meeting of the Parties (2002), the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and contiguous Atlantic area (ACCOBAMS) recognized that the Tethys Research Institute played a significant role in relevant activities of the Agreement and conferred to Tethys a status of "Partner". The importance of the conservation activities carried out in the Adriatic Sea has been recognized by the Ministers of the Council of Europe. In 1995 the Adriatic Dolphin Project was invited to participate in the European Nature Conservation Year. Furthermore, the project was nominated one of the "Ten Greenest Projects" by the Italian commission "Carnia Alpe Verde". I was featured several times in Italian nature magazines and newspapers, with questionable journalistic titles such as "The Nobel Prize of the Sea awarded to a Venetian" (Il Gazzettino) and "Biologist of the Year" (Airone).

Applied conservation efforts

In 1993 I co-authored a proposal for the creation of a marine reserve dedicated to dolphin community living around the islands of Losinj and Cres, in Croatia, based on data collected by my collaborators and myself. The project was included in the Environmental Management Plan for the Conservation of the Cres-Losinj Archipelago. Plans for the creation of a natural reserve dedicated to the dolphins were approved by the Croatian Government in 1996, and in 2006 - largely thanks to the efforts of BlueWorld - the waters around Losinj and Cres became a Marine Protected Area.

On May 17th, 1995, the Croatian Government welcomed the dolphin conservation message promoted in part by Tethys’ Adriatic Dolphin Project and granted legal protection to marine mammals.

Based primarily on data collected by Tethys, the "Ionian Dolphin Project" study area in the eastern Ionian Sea was qualified by the Greek Government as a "Site of Community Importance" in 1995, according to the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC Natura 2000.

Following an assessment I made as a member of the Cetacean Specialist Group, in 2003 the World Conservation Union (IUCN) classified the Mediterranean population of short-beaked common dolphins as “Endangered” in its Red List of Threatened Animals. This was the first Mediterranean cetacean included in the IUCN Red List.

In 2005, on behalf of the Principality of Monaco, I prepared a proposal to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (Bonn Convention - CMS). As a result of this proposal, the Mediterranean population of short-beaked common dolphins was moved from Appendix II to Appendix I, granting a much higher protection status. In addition, the listing - formerly limited to a "western Mediterranean population" - was extended to the whole Mediterranean population of common dolphins.

Following a proposal endorsed by the Scientific Committee of ACCOBAMS and supported by ACCOBAMS, Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society and OceanCare, I conceived and co-authored a Conservation Plan for short-beaked common dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea. This 90-page document is the first comprehensive action plan for the conservation of any cetacean species at the Mediterranean scale. The Plan was "strongly welcomed" by the Meeting of the Parties of ACCOBAMS.

On behalf of ACCOBAMS I also co-authored Action Plans for the conservation of cetaceans in the Black Sea and in the national waters of Georgia, a draft Action Plan for the conservation of Mediterranean common bottlenose dolphins, and a strategy for capacity building in the Agreement area. On behalf of UNEP’s Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (RAC/SPA), I prepared an Action Plan for the conservation of cetaceans in Libya (2004) and in Syria (2008).

As a scientific consultant to the Italian Central Institute for Applied Marine Research (ICRAM) I co-authored the "National Action Plan for the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Italian Seas (2001-2003)", a 160-page document prepared for the Italian Ministry of the Environment.

I contributed to several research and conservation programmes conducted by the Tethys Research Institute in the Mediterranean and I pioneered dolphin studies in Italy, Croatia and Greece.

Since 1987 I conducted extensive field research on cetaceans in the northern Adriatic Sea. This research has resulted in detailed information on the behaviour and ecology of common bottlenose dolphins living in the Kvarneric and in knowledge on the distribution and problems of cetaceans in the wider Adriatic. Field research and reviews of historical literature have resulted in a comprehensive assessment of the past and present status of northern Adriatic cetaceans.

Since 1997 I carried out systematic research programmes in the eastern Ionian Sea (comparative behaviour and ecology of sympatric short-beaked common dolphins and common bottlenose dolphins). I also conducted cetacean research in several parts of the central and eastern Mediterranean Sea (including a study on dolphin/fisheries competitive interactions in northern Sardinia), as well as in extra-Mediterranean areas (e.g., in the Caribbean Sea). The rationale of this work has been to provide evidence of the problems affecting Mediterranean cetaceans by means of a comparative research approach.

I am experienced in project management and coordination of project personnel. Since 1992, I trained hundreds of volunteers from several countries, who participated in the research activities carried out in Italy, Croatia and Greece. In the context of capacity building action promoted by ACCOBAMS, I trained researchers from Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Romania, Russia, Slovenia and Ukraine to facilitate the development of cetology in Mediterranean and Black Sea countries.

Between 1990 and 1996 I contributed to a whale and dolphin "adoption" programme that was successfully launched in Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland. I was responsible for providing the adopters with photographs and information on individual common bottlenose dolphins. As a result of this initiative, approximately 10,000 people provided financial support to Tethys’ research and conservation activities by "adopting" a cetacean.
