Giovanni Bearzi (born in Venice, Italy, in 1963) holds a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Basel, Switzerland, with a thesis on Mediterranean coastal dolphins. He has been carrying out and coordinating dolphin research projects since 1986, particularly in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. He founded and directed for a decade a dolphin research and conservation programme in Croatia, which was awarded the 'Henry Ford European Conservation Award' as best European project overall. Giovanni has always tried to combine his scientific work with public awareness and education to support marine conservation, and he has supervised a number of students and young researchers. He strives to integrate his interests, including design, computer media, science and ethics, into new ways of communicating concern for the ongoing loss of marine biodiversity. Since 1990 he has been a Board Member of the Tethys Research Institute and in 2000 he became the President of Tethys, a position he still holds. Between 2002 and 2006 he taught a course on Cetacean Conservation at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Venice, Italy. He is founder and coordinator of the Cetacean Alliance, a not-for-profit international network of non-governmental organisations committed to preserving marine biodiversity and reducing human impact on cetacean populations. In 2001 he was awarded a Pew Marine Conservation Fellowship.

Giovanni spends about half of his time at dolphin research stations situated along the Ionian Sea coast of Greece, and the other half in the area of Salento, Italy.

As conservation biologists, we often expect others to modify
their behaviors
or quit a job based on evidence that it has
negative impacts on the environment. Nevertheless,
we are rarely willing to change our own habits, even when
we are fully aware of the detrimental effects of our actions.

Honors and awards

Pew Marine Conservation Fellow
Regarded as the world's most prestigious award in marine conservation, Pew Marine Conservation Fellowships have been granted since 1996 to fund innovative work in marine ecosystems, fisheries management, coastal conservation, and marine contamination. Nominations are made through an international network of environmental experts. Evaluation and selection of Pew Fellows is conducted by an international advisory committee. I was awarded funding for a project titled "What threatens coastal dolphin populations in the Mediterranean Sea? Insight from interdisciplinary research in key areas".

Henry Ford European Conservation Award
The 1996 edition of one of the most prestigious environmental prizes in Europe attracted 1,000+ entries from 26 countries. After being selected as the best Italian project, the Adriatic Dolphin Project was seen by the jury as "a model of ongoing education, coupled with professional research and management", and was awarded as the "Best European Project Overall". The international panel of judges included representatives of the Council of Europe, the Conservation Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme and UNESCO. As the Adriatic Dolphin Project founder and director (1987-1996), I received the Grand Prix during the ceremony held in Budapest. The prize was entirely used to support conservation-oriented research on Mediterranean coastal dolphins.

Others
The importance of the conservation activities carried out in the Adriatic Sea has been recognised by the Ministers of the Council of Europe. In 1995 the Adriatic Dolphin Project was invited to participate in the European Nature Conservation Year. Furthermore, the project was nominated one of the "Ten Greenest Projects" by the Italian commission "Carnia Alpe Verde". I was featured in Italian nature magazines and newspapers with journalistic titles such as "The Nobel Prize of the Sea awarded to a Venetian" (Il Gazzettino) and "Biologist of the Year" (Airone).

I evaluated abstracts submitted to Conferences of the Society for Marine Mammalogy, abstracts submitted to Conferences of the European Cetacean Society (ECS), contributions to ECS proceedings ("European Research on Cetaceans"), and project proposals submitted to the International Foundation for Science (IFS) and to the Earthwatch Institute.

I worked as art director, editor or co-editor of several newsletters on cetaceans. I am in the Editorial Board of FINS, the newsletter of ACCOBAMS.

Applied conservation efforts

In 1993 I co-authored a proposal for the creation of a marine reserve dedicated to dolphins around the islands of Losinj and Cres, in Croatia, based on data collected by Tethys. The project was included in the Environmental Management Plan for the Conservation of the Cres-Losinj Archipelago. Plans for the creation of a natural reserve were approved by the Croatian Government in 1996, and in 2006 - largely thanks to the efforts of BlueWorld - the waters around Losinj and Cres became a Marine Protected Area.

On May 17th, 1995, the Croatian Government welcomed the dolphin conservation message promoted in part by Tethys’ Adriatic Dolphin Project and granted legal protection to marine mammals.

Based largely on data collected by Tethys, the "Ionian Dolphin Project" study area in the eastern Ionian Sea was qualified by the Greek Government as a "Site of Community Importance" in 1995, according to the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC Natura 2000.

Following an assessment I made as a member of the Cetacean Specialist Group, in 2003 the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified the Mediterranean population of short-beaked common dolphins as “Endangered” in its Red List of Threatened Animals. This was the first Mediterranean cetacean included in the IUCN Red List.

In 2005, on behalf of the Principality of Monaco, I prepared a proposal to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (Bonn Convention - CMS). As a result of this proposal, the Mediterranean population of short-beaked common dolphins was moved from Appendix II to Appendix I, granting a much higher protection status. In addition, the listing - formerly limited to a "western Mediterranean population" - was extended to the whole Mediterranean population of common dolphins.

Following a proposal endorsed by the Scientific Committee of ACCOBAMS and supported by ACCOBAMS, The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society and OceanCare, I co-authored a Conservation Plan for short-beaked common dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea. This 90-page document is the first comprehensive action plan for the conservation of any cetacean species at the Mediterranean scale.

On behalf of ACCOBAMS I co-authored Action Plans for the conservation of cetaceans in the Black Sea and in the national waters of Georgia, a draft Action Plan for the conservation of Mediterranean common bottlenose dolphins and a other conservation strategies targeting the Agreement area.

On behalf of UNEP’s Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (RAC/SPA), I prepared a National Action Plan for the conservation of cetaceans in Libya (2004) and co-authored a National Action Plan for cetaceans in Syria (2008).

On behalf of the Italian Central Institute for Applied Marine Research (ICRAM) I co-authored a National Action Plan for the conservation of cetaceans in Italy (2001-2003), a 160-page document prepared for the Italian Ministry of the Environment.

Since 1987 I conducted extensive field research on cetaceans in the northern Adriatic Sea. This research provided detailed information on the behaviour and ecology of common bottlenose dolphins living in the Kvarneric and in knowledge on the distribution and problems of cetaceans in the wider Adriatic. Field research and reviews of historical literature have resulted in a comprehensive assessment of the past and present status of northern Adriatic cetaceans.

Since 1996 I carried out research on short-beaked common dolphins and common bottlenose dolphinsin the Ionian Sea. I also conducted cetacean research in parts of the central and eastern Mediterranean Sea, as well as in extra-Mediterranean areas. The rationale of this work has been to investigate threats affecting cetaceans through a comparative approach.

I am experienced in the management and coordination of field projects. Since 1992, I trained hundreds of volunteers from several countries, who participated in research activities carried out in Italy, Croatia and Greece. In the context of capacity building actions promoted by ACCOBAMS, I trained researchers from Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Romania, Russia, Slovenia and Ukraine with the intent of facilitating the development of cetology in Mediterranean and Black Sea countries.

Between 1990 and 1996 I contributed to a whale and dolphin 'adoption' programme that was successfully launched in Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland. I was responsible for providing the adopters with photographs and information on individual common bottlenose dolphins. Approximately 10,000 people provided financial support to Tethys’ research and conservation activities by adopting a cetacean.

Communication technology

In the 1980s I designed some of the earliest educational multimedia computer programmes on cetaceans in Italy (with the Museum of Natural History of Pordenone, Italy, and with the Fondazione Cetacea, Italy). In 1990 I was an Apple Computer Developer.

I can use software for graphic design and editing/postproduction software for digital video. I completed a video documentary (DolphinPeople) and a short video on the decline of Mediterranean coastal dolphins.
